How do I do a battery check on my Cordless Grass Shears

Created by Chris McHale, Modified on Tue, 30 Jun at 2:14 PM by Chris McHale

Overview

If your cordless grass shears are not operating correctly, a simple battery check can help identify whether the issue is related to the battery charge level, installation, or charger performance.

The battery includes a built-in test function that shows remaining charge, and it must be correctly inserted into the tool to ensure proper operation. When charging correctly, the battery may also become slightly warm, which indicates that the charger is actively working.

Step-by-Step Guide – Battery Check

Step 1: Check the Battery Charge

Ensure the battery is fully charged before use.

Press the test button located on the front of the battery.

Check the indicator lights:

  • Multiple lights = sufficient charge
  • Few or no lights = battery needs charging

Step 2: Check Battery Installation

Insert the battery into the grass shears.

Push firmly until you hear a definitive click.

This click confirms the battery is securely locked in place.

If no click is heard, remove the battery and reinsert it.

Step 3: Confirm Proper Fit

Ensure the battery is fully seated and not loose.

Check the contacts on both the battery and tool are clean and free from debris, corrosion, or damage.

A poor connection can prevent the tool from powering on even when the battery is charged.

Step 4: Check Charger Performance (If Charging Issues Exist)

Place the battery onto the charger.

Confirm the charger is connected to a working mains socket.

During normal charging, the battery may gradually become slightly warm.

This is normal and indicates the charging process is working correctly.

If the battery remains completely cold while charging, recheck the connection or try an alternative power socket if available.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • If the tool does not start, always recheck battery seating first
  • Ensure the safety switch (if fitted) is fully engaged before testing
  • Try fully recharging the battery before assuming a fault
  • Inspect battery terminals for dirt or damage

Quick Summary

  • Check battery charge using the test button
  • Ensure battery clicks securely into place
  • Clean and inspect battery contacts
  • Confirm charger is working and connected properly

FAQ

Why won’t my grass shears turn on even with a charged battery?

This is usually caused by the battery not being fully seated or a poor connection between the battery and terminals. Remove and reinsert the battery until it clicks firmly into place.

Should the battery get warm while charging?

Yes, a slight temperature increase is normal and indicates the charger is actively charging the battery.

What does it mean if no indicator lights appear on the battery?

This usually means the battery is fully discharged or may need replacing if it does not respond after charging.

Can a dirty connection stop the tool from working?

Yes. Dirt, dust, or corrosion on the battery terminals can prevent proper contact and stop the tool from powering on. Clean gently and retry.
